"The space is inspired by the colors and motifs of Korean “GUT culture” - a ritual involving people, shamans, and deities, part of the very complex and ancient
Korean folk religion. In this culture, the participation of all present is especially significant. Soojin Oh stages the TD bar as a fictional place where a community can come together to overcome a state of resentment and grief. The elements displayed here are cited from a mourning ritual called “Jinogi-GUT” from the Seoul region, known for its colorful and complex blend of costumes, food, soliloquies, dialogues, and music. For instance, the lotus flower symbolizes the “Better Place” where the deceased will journey to. With the absence of traditionally important shamans, Soojin Oh encourages us to connect and achieve peace for the local society. The installation provides space for wishes for the deceased or for the future." - TD Berlin
(DE) "Der Raum ist inspiriert von den Farben und Motiven der koreanischen „GUT-Kultur“ – einem Ritual zwischen Menschen, Schaman*innen und Gottheiten, Teil der sehr komplexen und alten koreanischen Volksreligion. In dieser spielt vor allem auch die Partizipation aller Anwesenden eine wichtige Rolle. Soojin Oh inszeniert die Bar des TD als einen fiktiven Ort, an dem eine Gemeinschaft zusammenkommen kann, um einen Zustand des Grolls und der Trauer zu überwinden.
Die hier gezeigten Elemente sind einem Trauerritual namens „Jinogi-GUT“ aus der Gegend um Seoul entlehnt, das für seine farbenfrohe und komplexe Mischung aus Kostümen, Essen, Selbstgesprächen, Dialogen und Musik berühmt ist. Die Lotusblüte beispielsweise steht für den „Besseren Ort“ an den die Verstorbenen reisen werden. Mit der Abwesenheit der traditionell wichtigen Schaman*innen spielt Soojin Oh den Auftrag an uns zurück, uns zu verbinden und Frieden für die örtliche Gesellschaft zu erlangen. Die Installation bietet Raum für Wünsche an Verstorbene oder an die Zukunft." - TD Berlin
